Long times officials believed, flying by aircrafts was just a senseless crazy idea for some weary of life persons. They very sudden changed their minds, when the French aviator Louis Bleriot succeeded on the 25th of July 1909 to cross the Channel and land securely in Dover/England.
It was a shock for the British people, who suddenly realised, that the time of being an invincible island was over and the chance occurred, that Great Britain was occupied by soldiers, coming through the air.
All over the world states and military got interested in piloting and supported the air exploration. Soldiers got be trained by civil aviators and the first military air squadrons were founded.
Only five years later, when the First World War began, the just hopping aircrafts developed to aircrafts, that still fulfil the today's basic standards. Due to the demands on further developments caused by the dog-fights of pilots of the different parties, only another four years later, the first all metal aircrafts were successfully in use and got the fundament of civil flying and founding civil airlines in the post war period of WW1.
The following lists record the use of aircrafts in WW1 and their pilots until 1920. 1919, the Treaty of Versaille forbid Germany to produce and use aircrafts.
